This is the pivotal shloka of the chapter. Krishna declares: whoever leaves the body while remembering Me at the final moment attains My very nature. There is no doubt about this.

A child who falls asleep whispering a parent's name wakes up with that same face in mind. In the same way, the one whose last breath carries God's name arrives at God's abode. Krishna says this with absolute certainty — "nastyatra samshayah" — not even the smallest doubt.

The emphasis on the final moment reveals why lifelong devotion matters so much. Our elders have always said: make God's name a daily habit, so that when the last breath comes, the same name rises naturally to the lips.

This shloka directly answers Arjuna's final question (8.2) about knowing God at the time of death. The next shloka (8.6) generalizes this principle — whatever one thinks of at the end, that is what one becomes. Indian tradition places great importance on remembering God at life's close — visiting the banks of the Ganga, the tulsi leaf, the chanting of Ram's name — all are rooted in the spirit of this verse.
