After describing those who do not turn to Him, Krishna now describes those who do. Four kinds of good-hearted people approach Me: the person in distress (arta), the curious seeker (jijnasu), the one who desires something specific (artharthi), and the person of wisdom (jnani).

What makes this shloka remarkable is its generosity. Krishna does not say: only the wise may approach. Someone crying out in pain is also welcome. A child full of questions is also welcome. Someone who comes asking for something specific — also welcome. The door is wide open, and every kind of devotee is received.

It is like a grandfather's home. One grandchild comes crying, another comes with questions, another comes asking for a treat. The grandfather does not turn any of them away. Each one is met where they are.

This shloka keeps the doors of bhakti open to everyone. In the next shloka (7.17), Krishna will explain why the jnani is the most dear. But that does not diminish the other three — all four are called 'sukritinah' (virtuous).

The Bhagavata Purana describes nine forms of devotion. The Gita's fourfold classification here is based on the devotee's purpose — relief from suffering, curiosity, material desire, or pure knowledge.
