📖 Bhagavad Gita, Chapter 6 — Atma Samyama Yoga
शुचौ देशे प्रतिष्ठाप्य स्थिरमासनमात्मनः ।
नात्युच्छ्रितं नातिनीचं चैलाजिनकुशोत्तरम् ॥
Shuchau deshe pratishthaapya sthiramaasanamaatmanah
Naatyuchchhritam naatineecham chailaajinakushottaram
Shuchau deshe
in a clean place
Pratishthaapya
having set up, having spread
Sthiram aasanam
a firm, steady seat
Aatmanah
one's own
Na atyuchchhritam
not too high
Na atineecham
not too low
Chailaajinakushottaram
covered with cloth, deerskin, and kusha grass

Krishna gets specific. Choose a clean spot. Lay down kusha grass, place a deerskin over it, then a cloth on top. The seat should be neither too high nor too low — just right for steady, comfortable sitting.

Why does the height matter? A seat that is too elevated can feed the ego, creating a subtle sense of being above others. A seat that is too low can make concentration difficult and the body uncomfortable. The middle ground keeps both mind and posture settled.

These are not arbitrary rules. Every detail serves the purpose of removing distraction. A clean space calms the mind before meditation even begins. A stable seat means the body does not fidget. The layered materials insulate from damp ground and cold. Practical wisdom, dressed in simplicity.

Verses 6.11 and 6.12 together describe the full setup of the meditation seat. This reflects a sadhana tradition stretching back to Vedic times, summarized here by the Gita in compact form.

In ancient practice, kusha grass and deerskin were both considered purifying materials suited for meditation. These were traditional tools that supported the seeker's focus.
