Gita 3.38 Bhagavad Gita
📖 Bhagavad Gita, Chapter 3 — Karma Yoga
धूमेनाव्रियते वह्निर्यथादर्शो मलेन च ।
यथोल्बेनावृतो गर्भस्तथा तेनेदमावृतम् ॥
Dhumenavriyate vahnir yathadarso malena cha
Yatholbenaavrito garbhas tatha tenedam avritam
धूमेन
by smoke
आव्रियते
is covered
वह्निः
fire
यथा
just as
आदर्शः
a mirror
मलेन
by dust, by grime
and
यथा उल्बेन
just as by a membrane
आवृतः गर्भः
the embryo is covered
तथा तेन इदम्
so by this (desire) knowledge is covered

Three images, each more opaque than the last. Smoke covers fire — the fire is still there, just hidden temporarily. Dust covers a mirror — the reflection is distorted, and you need to clean it off. A membrane covers the embryo — the covering is thick, and the being inside must grow through it.

Knowledge is like that fire, that mirror, that embryo. It exists within every soul. Desire does not destroy it. It conceals it. Depending on how thick the veil of desire is, the effort to uncover the knowledge varies. Sometimes it takes a gentle wipe. Sometimes it takes sustained inner work over a long time.

This elaborates on 3.37. Desire is mahashanah (all-consuming) because it covers the very knowledge that could defeat it.

Verse 3.39 continues the description: desire is the perpetual enemy of the wise, never satisfied, like an insatiable fire.
