Gita 3.37 Bhagavad Gita
📖 Bhagavad Gita, Chapter 3 — Karma Yoga
काम एष क्रोध एष रजोगुणसमुद्भवः ।
महाशनो महापाप्मा विद्ध्येनमिह वैरिणम् ॥
Kama esha krodha esha rajoguna samudbhavah
Mahaashano mahapapma viddhy enam iha vairinam
कामः एषः
it is desire
क्रोधः एषः
it is anger
रजोगुणसमुद्भवः
born of the guna of rajas
महाशनः
all-devouring
महापाप्मा
greatly sinful
विद्धि एनम्
know this
इह
here, in this world
वैरिणम्
as the enemy

The answer lands like a verdict. That hidden force? It is kama — desire. And its twin: krodha — anger. When desire is fulfilled, it breeds more desire. When desire is blocked, it transforms into anger. Both spring from the guna of rajas, the principle of restless activity.

Krishna calls this enemy 'mahashanah' — one who devours everything. Desire consumes discernment, peace of mind, relationships, clarity. Like a fire that grows larger the more fuel you throw on it. Recognizing this enemy is the first step toward overcoming it.

This answers Arjuna's question from 3.36. The connection between kama and krodha is also mapped in Gita 2.62-2.63: desire leads to anger, anger leads to delusion, delusion leads to the destruction of memory and wisdom.

Verses 3.38 through 3.43 will describe how this enemy operates and how it can be conquered.
