Brahmana-Kshatriya-Visham

Gita 18.41 Bhagavad Gita
📖 Bhagavad Gita, Chapter 18 — Moksha Sannyasa Yoga
ब्राह्मणक्षत्रियविशां शूद्राणां च परंतप ।
कर्माणि प्रविभक्तानि स्वभावप्रभवैर्गुणैः ॥
Brahmanakshatriyavisham shudranam cha parantapa
Karmani pravibhaktani svabhavaprabhavair gunaih
ब्राह्मणक्षत्रियविशाम्
of brahmanas, kshatriyas, and vaishyas
शूद्राणाम् च
and of shudras
कर्माणि
duties, actions
प्रविभक्तानि
are divided, are distributed
स्वभावप्रभवैः
arising from one's own nature
गुणैः
by the gunas — sattva, rajas, and tamas

Krishna now turns to a practical question: how do people's duties differ? His answer is clear — the duties of brahmanas, kshatriyas, vaishyas, and shudras are divided according to the gunas that arise from each person's own nature. Not by birth. Not by lineage. By the qualities that naturally express themselves in a person.

This is an important distinction. The word used is 'svabhavaprabhavaih' — born from one's own nature. A person whose nature inclines toward learning, restraint, and reflection naturally fits brahmana-dharma. One whose nature inclines toward courage and leadership fits kshatriya-dharma. The classification follows the person's inner disposition, not their family name.

Krishna is setting up a framework that leads to a powerful conclusion in the coming shlokas: whatever your natural calling, pursue it wholeheartedly. Perfection comes not from imitating someone else's path, but from fully embracing your own.

The Gita's approach to varna is guna-karma-based, not birth-based. This same principle was stated in 4.13: 'chaturvarnyam maya srishtam gunakarmavibhagashah' — the four varnas were created by Me according to the division of gunas and karma.

The next three shlokas (18.42-44) will enumerate the specific duties of each varna — brahmana, kshatriya, vaishya, and shudra.
