Na Tad Asti Prithivyam Va

Gita 18.40 Bhagavad Gita
📖 Bhagavad Gita, Chapter 18 — Moksha Sannyasa Yoga
न तदस्ति पृथिव्यां वा दिवि देवेषु वा पुनः ।
सत्त्वं प्रकृतिजैर्मुक्तं यदेभिः स्यात्त्रिभिर्गुणैः ॥
Na tad asti prithivyam va divi deveshu va punah
Sattvam prakritijair muktam yad ebhih syat tribhir gunaih
न तत् अस्ति
there is no such thing
पृथिव्याम्
on earth
दिवि देवेषु
in heaven, among the devas
सत्त्वम्
any being, any entity
प्रकृतिजैः
born of prakriti (nature)
त्रिभिः गुणैः
from the three gunas
मुक्तम्
free, liberated

With one sweeping statement, Krishna closes the guna analysis. There is no being — on this earth or in the heavens among the devas — that exists free from the three gunas born of prakriti. No exceptions. Not even the celestial beings.

This is a humbling truth. The most accomplished sage, the most powerful deva, the smallest creature — all operate under the influence of sattva, rajas, and tamas. The proportions differ. The dominance shifts. But the presence of all three is universal.

And yet, this is not meant to discourage. The Gita teaches awareness of the gunas precisely so that a person can rise above their grip. Recognizing which guna is pulling you — that recognition itself is the first act of freedom. The goal is not to escape prakriti (which is impossible while embodied), but to become 'trigunatita' — one who transcends the gunas through understanding.

Chapter 14 of the Gita dealt with the three gunas in detail and concluded with the same teaching: every being born of prakriti is bound by the gunas. The fourteenth chapter's title, 'Gunatraya Vibhaga Yoga,' directly connects to this section.

This shloka closes the guna-analysis segment of Chapter 18. Starting from the next shloka (18.41), Krishna will describe the natural duties of the four varnas — classified not by birth, but by guna and karma.
