Dyootam Chhalayatam Asmi

Gita 10.36 Bhagavad Gita
📖 Bhagavad Gita, Chapter 10 — Vibhuti Yoga
द्यूतं छलयतामस्मि तेजस्तेजस्विनामहम् ।
जयोऽस्मि व्यवसायोऽस्मि सत्त्वं सत्त्ववतामहम् ॥
Dyootam chhalayatam asmi tejas tejasvinam aham,
Jayo'smi vyavasayo'smi sattvam sattvavatamaham.
द्यूतम्
the game of dice
छलयताम् अस्मि
among deceivers I am
तेजः
radiance — brilliance
तेजस्विनाम् अहम्
among the radiant I am
जयः अस्मि
I am victory
व्यवसायः अस्मि
I am determination — resolve
सत्त्वम्
sattva — goodness
सत्त्ववताम् अहम्
among the good I am

This shloka startles. Among deceivers, I am the game of dice. The inclusion makes sense only through the Gita's all-encompassing vision. The divine is present in every category — not only the noble ones. This is a statement of total pervasiveness, not an endorsement of gambling.

Victory, determination, and sattva — these three positive vibhutis follow. When someone wins through righteous effort, that victory carries the divine within it. When a person perseveres with firm resolve, that strength comes from the same source. And sattva — the quality of goodness, clarity, and balance — among those who embody it, the divine is there.

The game of dice is central to the Mahabharata. Yudhishthira's fateful dice game is the tragedy that triggers the great war. Naming dice as a vibhuti here is a philosophical statement: the divine is present even where we might not want to look for it.

Chapters 17 and 18 elaborate on sattva, rajas, and tamas. Here in 10.36, sattvavatamaham — among the sattvic, I am — points toward that same framework.
