Svayam Evatmanatmanam

Gita 10.15 Bhagavad Gita
📖 Bhagavad Gita, Chapter 10 — Vibhuti Yoga
स्वयमेवात्मनात्मानं वेत्थ त्वं पुरुषोत्तम ।
भूतभावन भूतेश देवदेव जगत्पते ॥
Svayam evatmanatmanam vettha tvam purushottama,
Bhootabhavana bhootesha devadeva jagatpate.
स्वयम् एव
You yourself alone
आत्मना
by Yourself
आत्मानम्
Yourself
वेत्थ
know
त्वम्
You
पुरुषोत्तम
O supreme being — O Purushottama
भूतभावन
O creator of all beings
भूतेश
O Lord of all beings
देवदेव
O God of gods
जगत्पते
O ruler of the world

Arjuna touches on something subtle here. You know Yourself by Yourself. No external proof is needed. No outside authority can confirm what the divine already knows from within. Like a lamp that needs no second lamp to see its own light — the divine is self-illuminating.

Four addresses follow in quick succession: Bhootabhavana (creator of all beings), Bhootesha (Lord of all beings), Devadeva (God of the gods), Jagatpate (ruler of the world). Each widens the circle. He creates, He governs, He stands above even the gods, and He holds the entire cosmos.

This shloka completes Arjuna's praise that began at 10.12. From 10.12 to 10.15, Arjuna has been speaking. Starting at 10.16, he will shift to asking: tell me Your vibhutis in detail.

Chapter 15 expands the concept of Purushottama at length. Here in 10.15, that same title appears from Arjuna's own lips.
