According to the Valmiki Ramayana, a great battle was raging in Lanka. Ram's vanara army was fighting Ravana's forces. One night, Indrajit released a powerful weapon — the Shakti-astra. It struck Lakshman directly.
Lakshman fell unconscious. He still breathed, but he could not rise. Panic spread through the army. The great warriors came running to Ram. Ram's heart was heavy with grief.
The royal physician Sushen was summoned. He examined Lakshman carefully. Then he spoke in a grave voice — 'On the Himalayas, there is a peak called Dronachal. On that peak grows the sanjeevani herb. That alone can save him. But it must be brought before sunrise.'
Every eye in the army turned to Hanuman. He bowed before Ram and flew into the northern sky, toward the Himalayas.
Hanuman arrived at the peak of Dronachal. All around him grew countless plants and herbs. But in the darkness and urgency of that night, he could not tell which one was the sanjeevani. They all looked the same.
Hanuman thought for a moment. Then he lifted the entire mountain peak in both hands and flew back toward Lanka — carrying the whole hill with him.
The Valmiki Ramayana tells us that Hanuman landed in Lanka with the peak. Physician Sushen identified the sanjeevani herb among the many plants. He prepared it. He gave it to Lakshman.
Lakshman's eyes opened. He rose. Strength returned to his body. Ram embraced his brother. A great sound of joy rose from the army.
Hanuman stood quietly nearby. There was no pride on his face — only the satisfaction of a task that needed doing, done.
