The Three Fish

📖 Vishnu Sharma — Panchatantra

Long ago, three fish lived in the same pond. Each one thought about the world in a different way.

The first fish always planned ahead — she thought about tomorrow before tomorrow arrived. The second fish was quick-witted and good at finding solutions on the spot. The third fish had a habit of saying, 'Whatever happens, happens. We'll see.'

One afternoon, some fishermen walked by the pond. They talked among themselves — 'Let's come back tomorrow with nets. There are plenty of fish here.'

The first fish heard every word. That very night, she slipped out through a narrow channel and swam to a faraway river. She called to her companions to come, but both of them refused.

The next morning, the fishermen cast their nets. The second fish got caught — but she was quick. She immediately went limp and played dead. The fishermen tossed her aside. She slipped back into the water and swam to safety.

The third fish was also caught in the net. She floated there thinking, 'What will be, will be — only God knows.' She could not get free.

Ever since that day, the creatures of the pond have said — sense danger before it arrives. And if you can't see it coming, at least think fast when it does. Trusting only to luck is the riskiest plan of all.

💡 Moral of this Story
Looking ahead is the best preparation of all.
The fish who planned in advance stayed the safest. Quick thinking can also save the day — but leaving everything to chance almost always leads to trouble. Vishnu Sharma created the story of the three fish to show three different ways of facing the same problem.
