न्यग्रोधोदुम्बरोऽश्वत्थश्चाणूरान्ध्रनिषूदनः ।
सहस्रार्चिः सप्तजिह्वः सप्तैधाः सप्तवाहनः ॥
Nyagrodho-Dumbaro-Ashvatthash-Chaanoora-andhra-Nisoodanah |
Sahasraarchih Sapta-jihvah Saptaidhah Sapta-vaahanah ||
न्यग्रोधः
the banyan tree — shelter to all
उदुम्बरः
pervading the sky above — the udumbara fig
अश्वत्थः
the peepal tree — the tree of this world
चाणूरान्ध्रनिषूदनः
slayer of the wrestler Chanura
सहस्रार्चिः
of a thousand rays
सप्तजिह्वः
of seven tongues — as fire has seven flames
सप्तैधाः
the seven kinds of sacred fuel
सप्तवाहनः
drawn by seven horses — the sun-form
The Lord shelters like the great banyan, steady like the peepal rooted across ages. As Krishna, he slew the wrestler Chanura who threatened the young cowherd. He is the sun on his seven-horsed chariot, the fire with seven leaping tongues — light and warmth moving through all the worlds.

अमूर्तिरनघोऽचिन्त्यो भयकृद्भयनाशनः ।
अणुर्बृहत्कृशः स्थूलो गुणभृन्निर्गुणो महान् ॥
Amoortir-Amagho-Achintyо Bhaya-krid-Bhaya-naashanah |
Anur-Brihat-Krishah Sthoolo Guna-bhrin-Nirguno Mahaan ||
अमूर्तिः
formless — without fixed form
अनघः
free from all sin
अचिन्त्यः
beyond the reach of thought
भयकृत्
the one who creates fear in the wicked

the one who destroys the fear of devotees

subtler than the subtlest

vaster than the vastest

as fine as a thread

of immense, cosmic form

the greatest of all
This shloka piles paradox on paradox — and every one of them is true. The Lord is formless and yet all form. Subtler than the finest atom, vaster than the entire universe. He holds every quality and stands beyond all quality. Thought cannot contain him. What it can do is bow.

अधृतः स्वधृतः स्वास्यः प्राग्वंशो वंशवर्धनः ।
भारभृत् कथितो योगी योगीशः सर्वकामदः ॥

अधृतः
held by none — self-subsisting

Nothing holds the Lord in place — he holds himself. He is the oldest lineage, prior to all beginning, and yet he tends to creation the way a gardener tends a growing vine. He carries the weight of the universe without strain, leads every yogi on the path, and fulfills every genuine desire.

आश्रमः श्रमणः क्षामः सुपर्णो वायुवाहनः ।
धनुर्धरो धनुर्वेदो दण्डो दमयिता दमः ॥
Aashramah Shramanah Kshaama Suparnо Vaayu-vaahanah |
Dhanur-dharo Dhanur-vedo Dando Damayitaa Damah ||
आश्रमः
the resting place of all — shelter itself
श्रमणः
the great ascetic — the one who strives
क्षामः
the one who dissolves the world
सुपर्णः
of beautiful wings — riding Garuda
वायुवाहनः
the one who drives the wind
धनुर्धरः
bearer of the bow — Shri Rama
धनुर्वेदः
the knowledge of archery itself
दण्डः
the rod of justice
दमयिता
the subduer
दमः
self-restraint itself
The Lord is the resting place — the ashram where all weariness ends. He rides Garuda with beautiful wings, drives the very wind, and in the Ram avatar he carried the bow as both warrior and the knowledge of the bow itself. He is justice, the one who subdues, and the very quality of self-restraint embodied.

अपराजितः सर्वसहो नियन्ता नियमोऽयमः ।
सत्त्ववान् सात्त्विकः सत्यः सत्यधर्मपरायणः ॥
Aparaajitah Sarva-saho Niyantaa Niyamo-Ayamah |
Sattva-vaan Saattvikah Satyah Satya-dharma-paraayaNah ||

bearing all — enduring everything

the regulator of all

free from Yama — beyond death

full of sattva — the quality of purity and clarity

The Lord is never defeated — not because he fights everything, but because he endures everything. He is the law underlying all laws, and he stands beyond even death. He is pure through and through, sattvic to his core, and his very being is truth. He does not merely follow dharma — he is the ground on which dharma stands.

अभिप्रायः प्रियार्होऽर्हः प्रियकृत् प्रीतिवर्धनः ।
विहायसगतिर्ज्योतिः सुरुचिर्हुतभुग्विभुः ॥

Vihaayasa-gatir-Jyotih Suruchir-Huta-bhug-Vibhuh ||

The Lord is the destination every sincere seeker is heading toward — he is the aim behind all aims. He is worthy of love and worthy of devotion. He tends to his devotees' dearest wishes, and in doing so, love in them grows. He moves through the sky on Garuda, receives every yajna offering, and pervades all of creation with his light.

रविर्विरोचनः सूर्यः सविता रविलोचनः ।
अनन्तो हुतभुग्भोक्ता सुखदो नैकजोऽग्रजः ॥

रविः
the sun — radiant
विरोचनः
illumining in many ways

Five names in this shloka circle around the sun — because the sun is the most visible sign of the Lord's radiance in our world. The sun is his eye, and he impels it. He is infinite, the giver of happiness, and he descends in avatars again and again — yet he is also the very first, prior to all beginning.

अनिर्विण्णः सदामर्षी लोकाधिष्ठानमद्भुतः ।
सनात्सनातनतमः कपिलः कपिरव्ययः ॥
Anirvinnah Sadaa-marshee Lokaadhisthaanam-Adbhutah |
Sanaat-Sanaatana-tamah Kapilah Kapir-Avyayah ||
अनिर्विण्णः
never discouraged — never despairing
सदामर्षी
ever patient — always forbearing
लोकाधिष्ठानम्
the foundation on which all worlds rest
अद्भुतः
wondrous — astonishing

ancient — eternal

the most ancient of all the eternal

in the form of the sage Kapila — founder of Samkhya

The Lord never despairs. No matter what creation brings, his patience holds. He is the foundation on which every world rests — wondrous, ancient beyond the ancient, imperishable. He descended as the sage Kapila to gift humanity the Samkhya understanding of creation and consciousness.

स्वस्तिदः स्वस्तिकृत्स्वस्ति स्वस्तिभुक्स्वस्तिदक्षिणः ।
अरौद्रः कुण्डली चक्री विक्रम्यूर्जितशासनः ॥

giver of svasti (well-being and auspiciousness)

Five consecutive names built around the word svasti — the ancient blessing that means 'may all be well.' The Lord is not only the giver of svasti but svasti itself. Alongside this tenderness he is heroic, bearing the Sudarshana Chakra, his governance firm and powerful — yet never cruel.

अक्रूरः पेशलो दक्षो दक्षिणः क्षमिणां वरः ॥

Words cannot capture the Lord — and yet the Vedas spend thousands of them trying. He stands beyond speech and within it at the same time. He is cool and calming like a breeze in the heat of summer, compassionate, gentle, and the most forgiving of all the forgiving. He who brings the night of dissolution also brings this: mercy.

This section presents names rooted in the Lord's formless and formed nature — Amoorti (formless), Yogisha (lord of yogis), Dhanurdhara (bow-bearer as Rama), Ananta (infinite), Savita (the sun-driver), and Svastida (giver of well-being). These names show his dual nature: beyond all description, and yet tenderly present.
