The Sri Sukta is the Vedic hymn to Lakshmi — and unlike later Puranic descriptions, this is pure Vedic poetry: golden-hued, radiant, moonlike, wearing garlands of gold and silver. The hymn asks Agni (the sacred fire) to bring Lakshmi here.

Lakshmi in the Vedic tradition is not just the goddess of money. She is the embodiment of Sri — beauty, radiance, auspiciousness, abundance in every form: wealth, health, good progeny, right conduct, divine grace. All of this is Sri.

The Sri Sukta is recited during Lakshmi puja on Diwali, during Vaibhava Lakshmi Vrat, and in many Vaishnava temple rituals. It is one of the few Vedic hymns that is universally known and recited across Hindu households.

The Sri Sukta belongs to the Khilani — appendix hymns of the Rigveda. Though technically supplementary, it has been treated with the same reverence as the main Rigveda hymns for centuries.

The Sri Sukta has 15 verses and is associated with the Shri Vidya tradition of Tantra, where Lakshmi and Tripura Sundari are seen as expressions of the same divine Shakti. It is also recited during Havan (fire rituals) dedicated to Lakshmi.
