The Gayatri Mantra is considered the most sacred mantra in the entire Vedic tradition. It is a prayer for illumination — not physical light, but the divine light of understanding that clarifies the mind and shows us the truth.

We meditate on the radiance of Savita — the solar deity, the divine illuminer of all worlds. And we pray: may that light inspire our intellect. May our thinking be lit up from within.

Traditionally, the Gayatri is recited three times a day — at sunrise (Pratah Sandhya), at noon (Madhyahna Sandhya), and at sunset (Sayam Sandhya). These three moments of transition are considered especially auspicious for prayer.

The Gayatri Mantra is from the Rigveda (3.62.10), composed by the sage Vishvamitra. It is in the Gayatri metre — 24 syllables arranged as three groups of eight. The Om and the Mahavyahritis (Bhur Bhuvah Svah) are added as a preamble in later tradition.

The Gayatri is considered the mother of all Vedas (Veda Mata). In the Bhagavad Gita (10.35), Krishna says: 'Among all mantras, I am the Gayatri.' It is traditionally initiated through the Upanayana (sacred thread) ceremony, though in modern times it is widely recited by all.
