This prayer from the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad is among the most universal in all of Sanskrit literature. Three lines. Three movements of the spirit — each a journey from the lesser to the greater.

From untruth (asat) to truth (sat). From darkness (tamas) to light (jyotih). From death (mrityu) to immortality (amrita). These are not three separate prayers — they are three ways of saying the same thing. They mirror each other like facets of one gem.

Asat is not just falsehood — it is everything impermanent, everything that appears to be but is not ultimately real. Sat is what is truly, finally real. The prayer is: take me home to what is real.

This mantra is from the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad (1.3.28), one of the oldest and largest Upanishads, belonging to the Shukla Yajurveda. It appears in a section where the gods pray to be led from the realm of demons to the realm of truth.

This prayer is widely recited in schools, at the start of spiritual discourses, and in daily puja. Its simplicity and depth have made it one of the best-known Sanskrit prayers in the world. It was quoted by many freedom movement leaders in India as well as by Swami Vivekananda and Rabindranath Tagore.
