The quiet day tradition associates with Shiva
🪔 Lord Shiva
📖 Shiva Purana, Kotirudra Samhita

The first day of the week is called Somvaar. Tradition associates it with Lord Shiva. It is remembered as a quiet, simple day.

Som is another name for the moon. According to the Shiva Purana, Shiva holds the crescent moon on his crown. This is why tradition has long connected the day of Som with Shiva.

The Kotirudra Samhita section of the Shiva Purana describes the Somvaar vrat (fast). It tells us that devotees have observed a fast on this day and many visit a Shiva temple to offer water and belpatra leaves.

The Skanda Purana also mentions the Somvaar vrat. The Mondays of Shravan month have long been especially associated with Shiva in tradition. This observance is still seen in many parts of northern India.
