Introduction
The fourth day of the week is called Guruvaar. The word guru means teacher. Among the planets, Brihaspati has traditionally been regarded as the teacher of the gods.
This is how the day came to be called Guruvaar. Tradition has also long connected this day with Lord Vishnu.
Traditional Beliefs
The Vishnu Purana and the Bhagavata Purana contain many legends of Lord Vishnu. These texts describe the various avatars of Vishnu across many episodes. Tradition records that many devotees have remembered Vishnu on Thursdays.
Brihaspati is mentioned in several Puranic texts as the teacher of the gods. In many parts of northern India, visiting Vishnu temples on Thursdays has been a long-standing tradition. Many people have also traditionally worn yellow on this day.
