The fifth day of the week is called Shukravaar. Shukra is the name of the planet Venus in the Indian planetary tradition. The day takes its name from this planet.
Tradition has long associated Friday with the Devi (the goddess). In many regions, the practice of visiting Devi temples on this day has continued across generations.
The Markandeya Purana contains the Devi Mahatmya — also known as the Durga Saptashati. This section gives a detailed account of the Devi's legends. Tradition records that many devotees have recited stotra (hymns) connected to the Devi on Fridays.
The Padma Purana contains legends associated with Lakshmi. According to tradition, Lakshmi is also remembered on Fridays. This practice has been observed in many parts of southern and western India for a very long time.
