Samo Aham Sarva-bhuteshu

Gita 9.29 Bhagavad Gita
📖 Bhagavad Gita, Chapter 9 — Raja Vidya Raja Guhya Yoga
समः अहम्
I am equal
सर्वभूतेषु
toward all beings
न मे द्वेष्यः
no one is hateful to me
न प्रियः
no one is especially dear
ये भजन्ति
those who worship
माम् भक्त्या
me with devotion
मयि ते
they are in me
तेषु च अपि अहम्
and I am in them

Krishna declares: I am the same toward all. No favourites, no enemies. The sun shines on the palace and the hut with equal warmth. It does not choose whom to illuminate. Krishna's presence works the same way.

And yet — those who worship him with devotion find themselves in him, and he finds himself in them. How does this square with equal treatment? The answer lies not in Krishna's bias but in the devotee's openness. A radio signal fills the entire room. But only the tuned receiver picks it up. Krishna's grace is everywhere. The devotee, by turning inward, receives it.

This is not contradiction — it is the nature of relationship. The divine is always available. Devotion is what opens the channel.

This shloka holds two truths simultaneously: Krishna's impartiality (sama-drishti, also described in 5.18-19) and his intimate bond with his devotees. Both are real.

The Upanishadic declaration 'Tat tvam asi' (Thou art That) finds its bhakti-marga expression here. 'Mayi te teshu chapy aham' — they are in me and I am in them — is the devotee's lived experience of non-separation.
