Krishna lays down a straightforward principle: your destination matches your devotion. Those who worship the devas reach the devas. Those who worship the ancestors go to the ancestors. Those who worship elemental spirits reach them.

And those who worship Krishna? They reach Krishna. The difference matters because the deva-lokas and pitri-lokas are temporary — their residents eventually return. But reaching Krishna is permanent.

This is not a judgment on any form of worship. It is a map. Every path leads somewhere. Krishna simply points out where each path ends, and leaves the choice to the seeker.

This shloka connects to 9.20-21, where the limits of heaven-bound worship were described. Here, Krishna makes the principle universal: the nature of your worship determines the nature of your destination.

The Chandogya Upanishad echoes this: the quality and direction of one's devotion shapes the result. The bhakti tradition has long seen this shloka as a guide to choosing one's path wisely.
