Every tree carries a seed within it, and from that seed, new life emerges. Krishna says: I am that eternal seed in every living being. Not a seed that was planted at some point in time — a seed that has always existed, without beginning.

The intelligence that allows a student to think clearly during an exam, the judgment that guides an elder to make the right decision — that buddhi is a gift from the divine. The radiance of a person who carries themselves with quiet dignity and strength — that tejas, too, comes from the same source.

This shloka gently quiets the ego. Whatever goodness exists within us — intelligence, brilliance, strength — is not ours to claim. It is the divine light shining through us. We are the lamp; the flame belongs to something far greater.

The concept of 'sanatan bija' — the eternal seed — points to the timeless nature of the divine. This lays the foundation for the detailed vibhuti-varnana in Chapter 10, where Krishna will expand on these manifestations.

The Chandogya Upanishad (6.12), where the teacher Uddalaka explains to Shvetaketu that everything exists within the seed — 'etad atmyam idam sarvam' — echoes precisely this idea. Gita 7.10 stands in that same 'bija-Brahman' tradition.
