Arjuna puts a direct question to Krishna. He says: sometimes you praise the renunciation of action, and sometimes you praise Karma Yoga. My mind is tangled. Tell me clearly — which of these two paths is truly better?

This is a natural question. Picture a child asking a grandparent: 'Dadaji, you tell me to speak less, then you tell me to speak freely — so what do I actually do?' Arjuna's confusion was exactly like that. He wanted one clear answer.

This shloka opens the fifth chapter. Arjuna's question here is the foundation on which the entire chapter rests.

This is the first shloka of Chapter 5, Karma Sannyasa Yoga. In the previous chapter, Krishna discussed Jnana Yoga and the renunciation of action, which created confusion in Arjuna's mind. Tradition considers this question very important — it prompts Krishna to clarify throughout the chapter that renunciation and Karma Yoga are not truly separate paths.
