Who deserves to be called a pandit? Not the one who has read the most books, but the one whose every undertaking is free from selfish desire and personal calculation. When knowledge burns away accumulated karma the way fire reduces wood to ash, what remains is a person of clarity. The discerning call such a person wise.

A tree that drops its fruit freely, without holding on, without counting — that is the image here. The wise person acts, but the actions carry no residue. No craving pushed them forward, and no regret trails behind.

In 4.18, the 'wise person' (buddhiman) and 'yukta' were described. Here that portrait sharpens into the word 'pandit' — redefining wisdom as inner freedom, not erudition.

The next shloka (4.20) describes how such a person lives in the world — always content, unattached to results, yet fully engaged in action.
