Niyatam Kuru Karma Tvam

Gita 3.8 Bhagavad Gita
📖 Bhagavad Gita, Chapter 3 — Karma Yoga
नियतं कुरु कर्म त्वं कर्म ज्यायो ह्यकर्मणः ।
शरीरयात्रापि च ते न प्रसिद्ध्येदकर्मणः ॥
Niyatam kuru karma tvam karma jyayo hyakarmanah
Sharira yatrapi cha te na prasiddhyed akarmanah
नियतम्
prescribed, obligatory
कुरु
perform
कर्म
duty
त्वम्
you
ज्यायः
better, superior
हि
indeed
अकर्मणः
than inaction
शरीरयात्रा अपि
even the maintenance of the body
न प्रसिद्ध्येत्
would not be possible

Here Krishna gives a direct command. Do your prescribed duty. Niyatam means the work that is naturally yours based on your situation and responsibilities. For Arjuna, that duty is to fight. For each of us, it is whatever our life demands of us right now.

Then comes a strikingly practical argument: even keeping the body alive requires action. Eating, drinking, breathing — these are all forms of karma. Without any action at all, even basic survival is impossible. So the question is never whether to act. It is always how to act.

This is the practical conclusion of verses 3.4 through 3.7. Since inaction is impossible, the only wise choice is to perform one's prescribed duty.

Gita 18.45 echoes this: 'sve sve karmanyabhiratah' — each person devoted to their own duty attains perfection.
