मनः
the mind
मनसः तु परा
higher than the mind
बुद्धिः
the intellect
यः बुद्धेः परतः
that which is beyond even the intellect
तु सः
that is the Self (Atman)

Krishna lays out a ladder of increasing subtlety. The physical body is gross. The senses are subtler and more powerful than the body. The mind is subtler and more powerful than the senses. The intellect surpasses the mind. And beyond even the intellect stands the Atman — the Self.

This hierarchy matters because desire nests at every level. To defeat it, you must climb higher than where it hides. If it sits in the senses, use the mind. If it invades the mind, use the intellect. If it taints even the intellect, only the Self — the awareness behind everything — can see through it. The ladder points you toward the ultimate vantage point.

This hierarchy closely mirrors the teaching in the Katha Upanishad (1.3.10-11), where the Self is described as the charioteer, the intellect as the reins, the mind as the chariot, and the senses as the horses.

Verse 3.43, the final verse of the chapter, will use this knowledge as the basis for the closing call to action: know the Self and conquer desire.
