Where does desire live? Krishna names three addresses: the senses, the mind, and the intellect. The senses chase sense objects. The mind replays and craves them. The intellect then constructs clever justifications for why the craving is reasonable.

Working through all three levels, desire covers knowledge and deludes the soul. The enemy is not outside. It is entrenched within, operating at multiple layers of your own being. Understanding this map is essential. You cannot fight an enemy whose location you do not know.

This clarifies 3.39. Knowing where desire resides tells you where the practice must happen: discipline of the senses, training of the mind, and purification of the intellect.

Verse 3.41 gives the practical instruction: begin by controlling the senses and then strike at this enemy directly.
