Tattvavit Tu Mahabaho

Gita 3.28 Bhagavad Gita
📖 Bhagavad Gita, Chapter 3 — Karma Yoga
तत्त्ववित्तु महाबाहो गुणकर्मविभागयोः ।
गुणा गुणेषु वर्तन्त इति मत्वा न सज्जते ॥
Tattvavit tu Mahabaho guna karma vibhagayoh
Guna guneshu vartanta iti matva na sajjate
तत्त्ववित्
the knower of truth
तु
but
महाबाहो
O mighty-armed (Arjuna)
गुणकर्मविभागयोः
of the division between gunas and action
गुणाः गुणेषु
the gunas among the gunas
वर्तन्ते
operate, interact
इति मत्वा
knowing this
न सज्जते
does not become attached

Verse 3.27 described the deluded person. This verse describes the opposite: the tattvavit, the one who sees reality clearly. This person understands a liberating truth — the gunas are simply interacting with other gunas. The senses (which are products of prakriti) are engaging with sense objects (also products of prakriti). The soul stands apart from all of it.

Once you truly grasp this, attachment falls away on its own. It is like watching a play and knowing you are in the audience, not on stage. The drama continues, but you are no longer caught up in it. This understanding is the philosophical foundation on which the entire practice of detached action rests.

This is the positive counterpart to 3.27. The deluded person sees themselves as the doer. The wise person sees the gunas at work and remains uninvolved.

Gita 14.19-14.23 describes the gunatita (one beyond the gunas) in full detail. The seed of that teaching is planted here.
