Utsideyur Ime Lokah

Gita 3.24 Bhagavad Gita
📖 Bhagavad Gita, Chapter 3 — Karma Yoga
उत्सीदेयुरिमे लोका न कुर्यां कर्म चेदहम् ।
सङ्करस्य च कर्ता स्यामुपहन्यामिमाः प्रजाः ॥
Utsideyur ime lokah na kuryam karma ched aham
Sankarasya cha karta syam upahanyam imah prajah
उत्सीदेयुः
would perish, would collapse
इमे लोकाः
these worlds
न कुर्याम्
if I did not perform
कर्म
action
चेत् अहम्
if I
सङ्करस्य
of confusion, of disorder
कर्ता स्याम्
I would be the cause
उपहन्याम्
I would destroy
इमाः प्रजाः
these beings, these people

The stakes could not be higher. Krishna says plainly: if I ceased to act, the entire world order would collapse. Confusion would spread. Beings would be destroyed. And I — the one who stopped — would be the cause.

This carries a lesson for anyone who has influence over others. A parent who gives up, a leader who stops showing up, a teacher who walks away — the damage spreads far beyond one person. Responsibility is not just about what you want. It is about what happens to everyone else when you stop.

This is the conclusion of Krishna's self-example that began in 3.22. His willingness to act despite having nothing to gain demonstrates the purest form of lokasangraha.

Gita 4.7-4.8 extends this idea: Krishna says he manifests again and again across the ages to uphold dharma. That too is his selfless action for the welfare of creation.
