Esha Te Bhihita Sankhye

Gita 2.39 Bhagavad Gita
📖 Bhagavad Gita, Chapter 2 — Sankhya Yoga
एषा तेऽभिहिता साङ्ख्ये बुद्धिर्योगे त्विमां शृणु ।
बुद्ध्या युक्तो यया पार्थ कर्मबन्धं प्रहास्यसि ॥
Esha te bhihita sankhye buddhir yoge tvimam shrinu
Buddhya yukto yaya Partha karmabandham prahasyasi
एषा
this
ते अभिहिता
has been told to you
साङ्ख्ये
in Sankhya (the path of knowledge)
बुद्धिः
wisdom, understanding
योगे तु
but in Yoga
इमाम् शृणु
hear this now
बुद्ध्या युक्तः
endowed with this wisdom
कर्मबन्धम्
the bondage of action
प्रहास्यसि
you will cast off

A turning point. Krishna pauses, looks at Arjuna, and says: everything I have told you so far belongs to Sankhya — the path of understanding the nature of things. Now listen to the wisdom of Yoga — the path of action. Armed with this understanding, you will break free from the bondage of karma.

Two roads, one destination. Sankhya asks: what is the truth? Yoga asks: how do I live by that truth? The first is insight; the second is practice. Krishna has spent the last twenty-eight shlokas building the insight. Now he turns to the question every listener has been waiting for: what do I actually do with this knowledge?

The promise is striking — 'karmabandham prahasyasi' — you will cast off the bondage of karma entirely. Not reduce it, not manage it, but shed it altogether. Actions bind only when they are driven by desire and attachment. Performed with the right understanding, they set you free.

This shloka marks the formal transition in Chapter 2. Shlokas 2.11-2.38 contained the Sankhya teaching — the nature of the soul, the inevitability of death, the duty of a Kshatriya. From 2.39 onward, the teaching shifts to Buddhi Yoga and Karma Yoga — the art of acting wisely and without bondage.

The term 'karmabandham' — bondage of action — becomes one of the central problems the Gita addresses. How can a person act in the world without being trapped by the consequences? The answer unfolds across the next several shlokas.
