Gita 2.37 Bhagavad Gita
📖 Bhagavad Gita, Chapter 2 — Sankhya Yoga
हतो वा प्राप्स्यसि स्वर्गं जित्वा वा भोक्ष्यसे महीम् ।
तस्मादुत्तिष्ठ कौन्तेय युद्धाय कृतनिश्चयः ॥
Hato va prapsyasi svargam jitva va bhokshyase mahim
Tasmad uttishtha Kaunteya yuddhaya kritanishchayah
हतः वा
if slain
प्राप्स्यसि स्वर्गम्
you will attain heaven
जित्वा वा
or if victorious
भोक्ष्यसे महीम्
you will enjoy the earth
तस्मात् उत्तिष्ठ
therefore, arise
कौन्तेय
O son of Kunti
युद्धाय
for battle
कृतनिश्चयः
with firm resolve

Here is the heart of Krishna's practical argument, distilled into two crystal-clear outcomes. If you are slain in battle, you attain heaven. If you win, you rule the earth. Either way, there is no losing. So arise, O son of Kunti, and fight with firm resolve.

There is a clarity here that cuts through every doubt. When both roads lead somewhere good, hesitation has no logical footing. It is like a farmer who discovers that whether it rains or stays dry, his particular crop will thrive. What reason remains to sit idle and watch the sky?

The word 'kritanishchayah' — with firm resolve — is the key. Krishna does not want Arjuna to stumble into battle half-heartedly, still torn and confused. He wants a clear decision, a full commitment. Action born of clarity is different in quality from action born of compulsion.

This shloka is the culmination of the worldly-consequence argument (2.33-2.37). After showing what is lost by inaction, Krishna now shows that action leads only to gain — in this world or the next.

'Uttishtha' — arise — is one of the most stirring commands in the Gita. It appears again in 4.42. Each time, it marks the moment where Krishna moves from explaining to exhorting.
