Shraddhavan Anasooyash Cha

Gita 18.71 Bhagavad Gita
📖 Bhagavad Gita, Chapter 18 — Moksha Sannyasa Yoga
श्रद्धावाननसूयश्च शृणुयादपि यो नरः ।
सोऽपि मुक्तः शुभाँल्लोकान्प्राप्नुयात्पुण्यकर्मणाम् ॥
Shraddhavan anasooyash cha shrinuyad api yo narah
So api muktah shubhan lokan prapnuyat punyakarmanam
श्रद्धावान्
one who has faith
अनसूयः
free from resentment, without fault-finding
शृणुयात् अपि
even if one merely listens
सः अपि मुक्तः
that person too is freed
शुभान् लोकान्
the auspicious realms, the pure worlds
पुण्यकर्मणाम्
of those who have performed meritorious deeds

The door opens even wider. You do not have to be a scholar. You do not have to master every shloka. If you simply listen to the Gita with faith in your heart and without resentment or fault-finding — that alone is enough. You too will be freed. You too will reach the auspicious realms that the virtuous attain.

Two qualities are asked for: shraddha (faith) and the absence of asooya (resentment). Faith is the willingness to receive. The absence of resentment is the willingness to receive without arguing, without looking for flaws, without approaching the teaching as something to defeat.

This is the Gita's widest invitation. Not everyone can study deeply. Not everyone can teach. But everyone can listen. And if that listening carries sincerity, it does not go to waste.

This shloka completes a progression: 18.68 praises the teacher, 18.70 praises the student, and 18.71 praises the listener. Together they cover every possible relationship a person can have with the Gita's wisdom.

The word 'anasooya' — without resentment — is a significant qualifier. Mere hearing is not enough. The attitude must be open. One who listens while looking for reasons to dismiss will not receive the same benefit.
