Machchittah Sarvadurgani

Gita 18.58 Bhagavad Gita
📖 Bhagavad Gita, Chapter 18 — Moksha Sannyasa Yoga
मच्चित्तः सर्वदुर्गाणि मत्प्रसादात्तरिष्यसि ।
अथ चेत्त्वमहंकारान्न श्रोष्यसि विनङ्क्ष्यसि ॥
Machchittah sarvadurgani matprasadat tarishyasi
Atha chet tvam ahankaran na shroshyasi vinankshyasi
मच्चित्तः
with mind fixed on Me
सर्वदुर्गाणि
all difficulties, all obstacles
मत्प्रसादात्
by My grace
तरिष्यसि
you will cross over
अहंकारात्
due to ego
न श्रोष्यसि
you will not listen
विनङ्क्ष्यसि
you will perish, you will be destroyed

Two paths. Two outcomes. Krishna lays them out with complete clarity. Fix your mind on Me, and by My grace you will sail across every difficulty — no matter how large, no matter how many. That is one path. The other: if ego stops your ears, if pride makes you refuse to listen — you will be destroyed.

The image is of a river crossing. On one side stands the person willing to take refuge. On the other stands the person clutching their own certainty so tightly that they cannot reach for help. The river does not care which bank you choose — but the current is real.

There is both tenderness and firmness in Krishna's voice here. He is not threatening Arjuna. He is being honest with someone he loves. A doctor who tells a patient the consequences of ignoring treatment is not being cruel — they are being truthful.

This shloka is directly personal — addressed to Arjuna with the singular 'you.' In the context of the battlefield, this is a direct, urgent statement. The consequences are not abstract.

The word 'vinankshyasi' — you will perish — is deliberately strong. Krishna balances compassion with candor throughout the Gita, and this is one of those moments where candor takes the lead.
