📖 Bhagavad Gita, Chapter 18 — Moksha Sannyasa Yoga
सहजं कर्म कौन्तेय सदोषमपि न त्यजेत् ।
सर्वारम्भा हि दोषेण धूमेनाग्निरिवावृताः ॥
Sahajam karma kaunteya sadosham api na tyajet
Sarvarambha hi doshena dhumenaagnir ivavritah
सहजम्

सदोषम् अपि
even if it has defects
न त्यजेत्
should not be abandoned
सर्वारम्भाः
all undertakings, all actions
दोषेण
by defect
धूमेन अग्निः इव
as fire is by smoke
आवृताः
are covered, are enveloped

Krishna addresses the perfectionist's trap directly. Do not abandon your natural work just because it has flaws. Every action in this world carries some defect — just as every fire, no matter how bright, is accompanied by smoke.

A farmer ploughing the field unavoidably disturbs creatures in the soil. A doctor performing surgery causes temporary pain. A leader making decisions will never please everyone. If the standard for action is zero defect, then no one would ever do anything at all. The smoke cannot be separated from the fire.

This is one of the Gita's most liberating teachings. It frees a person from the paralysis of waiting for conditions to be perfect. Do your work. Accept the smoke. The fire — the warmth, the light, the purpose — is what matters.

The metaphor 'dhumena agnir iva' (as fire is covered by smoke) is striking in its simplicity and universality. Fire does its work — warming, illuminating, cooking — despite the smoke. In the same way, a person must do their duty despite its inherent imperfections.

This shloka is the Gita's direct answer to perfectionism. It does not ask for flawless action. It asks for committed action. The flaws are acknowledged, accepted, and transcended through continued effort.
