Chapter 17 opens with a question that has lived in people's hearts for centuries. Arjuna turns to Krishna and asks: there are people who set aside the rules laid down in scripture, yet worship with genuine faith in their hearts. Where do they stand? Is their faith sattvic, rajasic, or tamasic?

This is a question many of us carry without ever putting it into words. Countless people visit temples, observe fasts, and offer prayers — but they may not know the precise rituals prescribed in the scriptures. Yet their devotion runs deep. Arjuna wants to know: what category does such faith belong to?

The question matters because it unlocks this entire chapter. In response, Krishna will systematically classify faith, food, worship, austerity, and charity — all through the lens of the three gunas.

At the end of Chapter 16, Krishna emphasized the importance of following scriptural guidelines. Arjuna's question here is a natural follow-up: if someone does not know the scriptural rules but still has faith, what happens to them? This question forms the foundation of the entire Shraddhatraya Vibhaga Yoga chapter. Krishna responds with a detailed analysis of faith across the three gunas.
