Na Tad Bhasayate Suryah

Gita 15.6 Bhagavad Gita
📖 Bhagavad Gita, Chapter 15 — Purushottama Yoga
न तद्भासयते सूर्यो न शशाङ्को न पावकः ।
यद्गत्वा न निवर्तन्ते तद्धाम परमं मम ॥
Na tad bhasayate suryo na shashanko na pavakah,
Yad gatva na nivartante tad dhama paramam mama.
न तद् भासयते
does not illuminate it
सूर्यः
the sun
न शशाङ्कः
nor the moon
न पावकः
nor fire
यद् गत्वा
having reached where
न निवर्तन्ते
they do not return
तत्
that
धाम परमम् मम
is my supreme abode

Every source of light we know — the sun by day, the moon by night, the fire in our homes — none of these can illuminate the supreme abode. That place is self-luminous. It does not need any external light because it is the source of all light.

Consider how the sun is so bright that it blinds the eye, yet the sun itself cannot be stared at. The supreme abode is something like that — beyond the reach of any created light. It is an inner radiance, not an outer one.

And once a person reaches that place, there is no coming back to this cycle of birth and death. That is the mark of this abode. Krishna calls it 'my supreme dhama' — his own dwelling. It is not a location on a map. It is the presence of the divine itself.

This shloka follows 15.5 and describes the nature of the supreme abode. The imagery of sun, moon, and fire being unable to illuminate it also appears in the Mundaka Upanishad (2.2.10) and the Shvetashvatara Upanishad. The phrase 'yad gatva na nivartante' echoes 15.4's 'na nivartanti bhuyah,' reinforcing that this abode lies beyond the cycle of return.
