Krishna says: what the field is, what it is like, what its modifications are, where it arises from — and who the knower is and what his influence is — hear all of this from Me in brief.

This verse is a table of contents for what follows. It is like an elder settling down and saying, 'Sit. Let me explain everything to you, one thing at a time.' Krishna is preparing Arjuna for a careful, systematic teaching.

This is the fourth shloka of Chapter 13 in the Gita Press edition. After this, Krishna will lay out in detail the elements that make up the field.

The word 'samasena' (in brief) signals that the explanation will be concise but complete. The detailed enumeration begins in the next verse.
