Gita 12.14 Bhagavad Gita
📖 Bhagavad Gita, Chapter 12 — Bhakti Yoga
सन्तुष्टः सततं योगी यतात्मा दृढनिश्चयः ।
मय्यर्पितमनोबुद्धिर्यो मद्भक्तः स मे प्रियः ॥
Santushtah satatam yogi yatatma dridhanishchayah
Mayyarpitamanobuddhir yo madbhaktah sa me priyah
सन्तुष्टः
content, satisfied
सततम्
always, at all times
योगी
a yogi, a practitioner
यतात्मा
self-controlled
दृढनिश्चयः
of firm resolve, unwavering determination
मयि
in Me
अर्पितमनोबुद्धिः
having offered mind and intellect
यः
who
मद्भक्तः
My devotee
सः
that person
मे प्रियः
is dear to Me

Four qualities stand out in this shloka. The devotee is always content — not occasionally satisfied when things go well, but fundamentally at ease regardless of circumstances. Self-controlled — master of their own impulses. Of firm resolve — once a direction is chosen, they do not waver. And their mind and intellect are offered to Krishna.

Contentment here is not complacency. It is the settled peace of an elderly grandmother who has lived through plenty and scarcity both, who sleeps soundly whether the house is large or the room is small. Pair that with dridha-nishchaya — iron resolve — and you have a devotee who is both gentle and unshakable. That combination, Krishna says, is what makes someone dear to Him.

This shloka continues the devotee-qualities section (12.13-19). After friendliness, compassion, and freedom from ego in 12.13, Krishna now adds contentment, self-control, and firm resolve in 12.14.

These qualities are not abstract ideals. Traditional commentaries note that they describe attainable human characteristics — traits that can be cultivated in daily life, not only in a monastery or forest.
