Ami Hi Tvam Surasanghah

Gita 11.21 Bhagavad Gita
📖 Bhagavad Gita, Chapter 11 — Vishwarupa Darshana Yoga
Ami hi tvam surasanghah vishanti kechid bhitah pranjalayo grinanti
Svastityuktva maharshisiddhasanghah stuvanti tvam stutibhih pushkalabhih
सुरसङ्घाः
hosts of devas, celestial beings
विशन्ति
enter
भीताः प्राञ्जलयः
frightened, with folded hands
गृणन्ति
they praise, they chant
स्वस्ति इति उक्त्वा
saying 'Svasti!' (may all be well)
महर्षिसिद्धसङ्घाः
assemblies of great sages and siddhas
स्तुतिभिः पुष्कलाभिः
with abundant hymns of praise

The vision is no longer something Arjuna watches from a distance. Now it draws others in. Entire hosts of devas stream into Krishna's cosmic form. Some are terrified. They fold their hands and chant prayers — not out of ritual obligation, but out of raw, overwhelming awe.

Meanwhile, the great sages and siddhas respond differently. They cry 'Svasti!' — a Vedic benediction meaning 'may all be well' — and then pour out abundant hymns of praise. Picture a crowd where some people stand frozen, unable to speak, while others break into spontaneous song. Both reactions are genuine. Both arise from the same staggering sight.

What makes this shloka striking is that even celestial beings — devas, sages, siddhas — are not above being overwhelmed. If the gods themselves tremble and praise, the vision must be beyond anything even they have encountered before.

This shloka is in the Trishtup meter. It continues Arjuna's description of what he sees in the Vishwarupa. The three categories mentioned — devas, sages, and siddhas — represent the highest beings in the Vedic and Puranic cosmology. All three respond to the cosmic form.

The next shloka (11.22) will list specific groups of devas — Rudras, Adityas, Vasus, and more — all gazing at the form in astonishment.
