Tad-buddhayas-tad-atmanah tan-nishthas-tat-parayanah
Gachchhanty-apunar-avrittim jnana-nirdhuta-kalmashāh
तद्बुद्धयः
those whose intellect is fixed on That
तदात्मानः
whose minds are absorbed in That
तन्निष्ठाः
whose faith rests in That
तत्परायणाः
who take That as the supreme refuge
गच्छन्ति
they go
अपुनरावृत्तिम्
to the state of no return
ज्ञाननिर्धूत
cleansed by knowledge
कल्मषाः
whose sins

Those whose intellect, mind, faith, and final refuge — all four — rest in the Supreme, those whose sins have been washed clean by knowledge, they reach the state from which there is no return.

When a river reaches the ocean, it does not remain a river. It becomes the ocean itself. In the same way, those who are fully absorbed in the Paramatma step out of the cycle of worldly existence altogether.

This shloka describes the culmination of Jnana Yoga. 'Apunar-avrittim' — the state of no return — points to moksha. Tradition gives special weight to the phrase 'jnana-nirdhuta-kalmashāh': knowledge is not merely intellectual — it also purifies the accumulated burden of sin.
