Krishna's answer begins here. He says: O son of Kunti, this body is called 'the field.' Think of a farmer's land — seeds are sown in it, crops grow from it. In exactly that way, this body is a field where actions, emotions, and impressions are sown and bear fruit.

And the one who knows this field — who recognizes 'I have a body, but I am not the body alone' — that one is called the Kshetragna, the knower of the field. This knower is the inner witness, distinct from the body itself.

With this shloka, Krishna begins answering Arjuna's question from the first verse. The distinction between Kshetra and Kshetragna — field and knower — is a foundational concept in Indian philosophy.

Once a seeker grasps this first distinction, the rest of the chapter unfolds naturally. The body is temporary. The conscious presence that knows it is enduring. That is the essence of this verse.
