Sanniyamyendriyagramam

Gita 12.4 Bhagavad Gita
📖 Bhagavad Gita, Chapter 12 — Bhakti Yoga
सन्नियम्येन्द्रियग्रामं सर्वत्र समबुद्धयः ।
ते प्राप्नुवन्ति मामेव सर्वभूतहिते रताः ॥
Sanniyamyendriyagramam sarvatra samabuddhayah
Te prapnuvanti mam eva sarvabhutahite ratah
सन्नियम्य
having fully restrained
इन्द्रियग्रामम्
the entire group of senses
सर्वत्र
everywhere, in all situations
समबुद्धयः
with equal understanding, even-minded
ते
they
प्राप्नुवन्ति
attain, reach
माम् एव
Me alone
सर्वभूतहिते
in the welfare of all beings
रताः
engaged, devoted

This completes the picture that 12.3 began. The seekers of the formless Brahman restrain all their senses, maintain equal vision everywhere, and devote themselves to the welfare of every living being. Such seekers, Krishna says, also reach Me.

Pay attention to those last words: 'sarvabhutahite ratah' — devoted to the good of all beings. This is the hallmark of the nirguna seeker. Like a farmer who works not just for his own field but worries about whether the whole village has water — this seeker lives not for personal liberation alone, but for the well-being of all.

This is the second half of the 12.3-4 pair. While 12.3 described the nature of the formless Brahman, 12.4 describes the qualities of its seekers: sense control, equanimity, and concern for all beings. Together, these two shlokas offer the complete picture of nirguna devotion.

The phrase 'sarvabhutahite ratah' has been considered deeply significant in traditional commentaries. It marks the nirguna seeker's identity — not someone withdrawn from the world, but someone actively engaged in the welfare of all.
