Krishna now lays out a clear ascending order. Knowledge is better than mechanical practice. Meditation is superior to mere knowledge. Renunciation of the fruits of action surpasses even meditation. And from that renunciation — peace comes immediately. Not eventually. Not after years of waiting. Right away.

Each step has its own value, like rungs on a ladder where every rung supports the next. But the topmost result — shanti, peace — comes from letting go of attachment to outcomes. Think of a student who has been lying awake at night worrying about exam results. The moment she genuinely stops caring about the grade and focuses only on learning, sleep returns that very night. That is 'anantaram' — peace follows renunciation without a gap.

This shloka closes the practice ladder section (12.8-12). Krishna has offered four steps, and now He compares them. The comparison is not meant to dismiss any path — every approach is valid. But phala-tyaga (renunciation of results) produces the most immediate fruit: peace.

This verse is well-known independently of its chapter context. After this, from 12.13 onward, Krishna begins the beloved 'devotee qualities' section (bhakta-lakshana), describing the traits of the person He holds most dear. This sequence runs through 12.19.
